Dear Jen,

When researching LinkedIn profiles, I noticed some accounts that are really expressing their personalities in what they say and how they describe themselves.  It sure makes a profile unique, but as someone exploring professional marketing management positions, do I risk coming across too unprofessional or edgy?  I know we need the profile to work for us and contain key words and points … but how far can we safely go?

Signed,

Dear Dave,

This is a great question and in my book, a simple answer as well!

Know your audience. In marketing, you need know who your audience is and market your product to them. In this case, the product is you! Consider the target companies for which you would like to work and think about how you can demonstrate your expertise through your LinkedIn profile. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine while following our top LinkedIn profile tips here. You want to be a part of an organization that values you for who you are and the expertise you can bring to the organization. And if you can use that to your advantage and stand out from the crowd, I say go for it. Do remember that LinkedIn is a professional networking site and what you put out there is the first impression people will have of you. So be smart, be thoughtful and don’t be afraid to be unique!

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
